Steve writes;

“I’ve had a camera of some sort since I was fourteen; I’ve got the boxes of prints and negatives to prove it!  A trip to Australia pre digital nearly bankrupted me getting all the films developed on my return.  Over the years I have had various forays into “proper” photography taking portraits of friends or artistic shots of one sort or another but they weren’t particularly successful.

About four years ago, my wife gave me a voucher for an introductory day with the SWPS.  (This turned out to be her planning for my retirement!)  I had a morning at the school looking at theory and the afternoon on location; that reinforced my drive to learn more and was the start of my bumpy trip to the RPS.

 I started on “Portfolio one” and over that year was pushed to look at areas of photography, both technical and artistic, that were new and somewhat frightening.  “Portfolio two” continued the trend and “Portfolio three” was really the run up to my submission for the LRPS.

Without Lynn and Graham I don’t think I would have been successful on my first go.  They both advised and encouraged me in developing the final 10 images.  It was really difficult when you start looking so critically at your own work to find those 10 perfect pictures that then work sympathetically together in a panel.

The last weeks before the assessment, I still needed one image to complete the panel.  I was told it needed to be red, blue and gray to match another shot.  That was really frustrating until I remembered a comment from Graham about making an image and Lynn about mixed media.  Can you guess which one it is?

The whole experience has been really enjoyable and I’m going to continue with the “distinction group” run by the school to see where my photography takes me next.”
